iPhone, iPad and Mac sales estimates raised by Goldman Sachs

iPhone, iPad and Mac sales estimates raised by Goldman Sachs

Investment bank Goldman Sachs believes that sales of the iPhone, iPad and Mac “could sharply exceed our prior expectations”.

According to a report on Apple Insider, analyst Bill Shope told investors that “increasing competitive momentum and compelling new products” will see sales of Apple’s key products exceed initial expectations.

“We believe recent macroeconomic uncertainty has had surprisingly little impact on Apple’s revenue and profit momentum. Indeed, we believe iPads, Macs, and iPhones could sharply exceed our prior expectations,” Shope said.

A next-generation iPhone, iOS 5, new iPods and iCloud products set to arrive this autumn, as well as the iPad 3, which will come early next year, mean that the outlook is bright for Apple, Shope said.

The bank raised its estimates for Apple’s September quarter performance to $28.71bn in revenue and $7.30 earnings per share, up from $27.37bn and $6.49.

Shope reckons that Apple will ship 42.39 million iPads by the end of 2011, saying that a lack of competition in the market gave Apple an easy ride. In particular, he criticised “the inability of most Android vendors to offer competitive price points”.

He also said that Apple will ship 114.5 million iPhones in the whole of 2012, as opposed to its earlier estimate of 109.1 million. However, current iPhone sales were declining as consumers wait for the next-generation handset to launch.

Shope said that sales of Macs would increase from 16.36 million units in 2011 to 18.64 million in 2012, growth of 13.9 percent.

Sweepstakes for Life Is Strange vinyl soundtrack launches | Life is Strange

Sweepstakes for Life Is Strange vinyl soundtrack launches | Life is Strange

5 lucky gamers who purchase physical limited editions of Life Is Strange through Square Enix’s online store will get a rare vinyl copy of the game’s soundtrack.

Square Enix recently announced that to celebrate the upcoming physical release of the award-winning Life Is Strange on January 19, they’re holding a sweepstakes to give away five copies of the game’s soundtrack on vinyl. Everyone who orders a physical copy of the Life Is Strange limited editions through Square Enix’s online store will automatically be entered in the sweepstakes.

All of the limited editions in the online store can be bought for $39.99, but PC gamers who opt for a limited physical edition instead of the standard download will get the biggest price hike. While Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players will only have to pay $10 more than they would for the standard versions of the game, the physical limited edition of the PC version costs $20 more than a standard download of the complete version of the game.

The sweepstakes announcement includes the following glowing description of the rare soundtrack prizes:

Featuring over 20 tracks, the Life Is Strange Official Soundtrack [VINYL EDITION] is a 2 record set that was made in extremely limited quantities and cannot be purchased anywhere! When opened, you’ll get some beautiful artwork of Max Caulfield across its 24 inch wide bi-fold sleeve. To make this soundtrack extra spacial, we’ll be getting them signed by a special developer from DONTNOD before sending them off to the 5 lucky winners. Unfortunately these literally just came in so we haven’t had a chance to sign them yet, but rest assured that they’ll be signed when the sweepstakes is over!

The rules of the sweepstakes, along with other details, can be found here.

Corel sues over State-Microsoft deal

Corel sues over State-Microsoft deal

Corel is suing the US Department of Labour (DoL) over alleged unlawful procurement practices that divert business exclusively to Microsoft.

Corel says the DoL handed Microsoft an exclusive, three-year contract worth $8 million and is seeking an injunction against the contract.

Corel won a victory in a similar case against the Canadian government in June this year. That case involved an eight-year supply deal that had been awarded to Microsoft.

News of Corel’s suit was broken in a Reuters report.

Titan Siege MMORPG Receives A Huge Update | Titan Siege

Titan Siege MMORPG Receives A Huge Update | Titan Siege

GAMESCO releases a huge update to the MMORPG, Titan Siege!

Just a couple days ago on April 19, GAMESCO announced and released the largest update ever to its MMORPG, Titan Siege. This game features 2,000 player siege battles, and now offers over 50 new quests, 50+ new weapons and armor sets, and over 500 or more items including  the “Equipment of the Gods” collection.

Besides all the new quests, the Equipment of the Gods collection is probably one of the biggest highlights of this update. This collection gives high-level players the ability to equip one of the game’s most powerful weapons, including but not limited to the Sword of the Warrior Gods, as well as pure gold-plated war armor. And of course, high-level players now can also enjoy and look forward to over 50 new quests and hundreds more hours worth of extra gameplay and places to explore in the expanding world. Now who doesn’t like that?

Another addition to this update is a brand new game store that will be open for business. This store will allow all players to buy unique items and units using in-game currency. Some of the things you can buy are faster and stronger beast companions, enhanced battle clothing, healing items, and more.

But wait, there’s more!

This update is introducing a new Totem system that promises to make combat more varied then ever before. The totems, which you can find around the world, will provide players with valuable percentage bonus points during a battle. Being near a totem will give players an increase in either magic, speed, or defense attributes.

If you are unaware of this game, since it was just given a western release recently, Titan Siege’s game world features over 300 creatures, 15 cities, and over 300 quests. Not to mention it has epic 2000-player sieges in which players can command armies and up to ten different siege engines.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more updates on Titan Siege as they are revealed and released. If you are an MMORPG player, Titan Siege seems like a good game to check out — I myself just started playing the game yesterday while waiting for Grimm: Dark Legacy, another MMO that’s being released to beta this year by the same developer.

Expo: Cube Mac, new iMacs, dual-G4s at Macworld Expo

Expo: Cube Mac, new iMacs, dual-G4s at Macworld Expo

During Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at Macworld Expo, Apple introduced an entirely new line of desktops including a cube-shaped Power Mac G4, an all-new iMac family and dual-processor Power Mac G4s. All of these new desktops will ship standard with Apple’s new, innovative optical mouse and full-sized pro keyboard. They will also come pre-installed with Apple’s updated iMovie 2 consumer digital video-editing software.

Cubist revolution
The Power Mac G4 Cube – or G4 Cube – delivers the performance of a Power Mac G4 in an eight-inch cube suspended in a stunning crystal-clear enclosure. The G4 Cube (pictured here) is less than one fourth the size of most PCs, yet houses a 450MHz PowerPC G4 processor that reaches “supercomputer speeds” of over three billion calculations per second (Gigaflops), according to Apple. A 500MHz version will also be available.

The G4 Cube (from £1,249 exluding VAT) includes 64MB of memory (expandable to 1.5GB); 20GB of storage (configurable up to 40GB); a top-mounted slot-loading DVD drive; two FireWire and two USB ports; 10/100Base-T ethernet and a 56K V.90 modem. Click here for more details of the G4 Cube.

New-colour 500MHz iMacs
The new iMac line features four new models in refined new colours. The new iMac colours are Indigo, Ruby, Sage and Snow. Even the Graphite colour case has been “improved”, according to Apple. The new G3-powered iMacs now run at up to 500MHz, offering larger storage up to 30GB. Prices start at £649 (including VAT).

Multiprocessing Macs
Apple’s all-new Power Mac G4 line features two models that are the first mainstream PCs to come standard with dual processors. The 450MHz and 500MHz Power Mac G4s now each contain two PowerPC G4 processors, delivering up to 7 billion calculations per second.

Apple claims that, when running Adobe Photoshop, the dual-processor 500MHz Power Mac G4 is as fast as a 2GHz Pentium III is expected to be upon its release in 18 months time.

The cheapest multiprocessing Mac costs £1,749 excluidng VAT.

All-new mouse
The new optical Apple Pro Mouse does not require a mousepad, and features an ergonomic, full-surface button and new elliptical shape. The new Apple Pro Keyboard offers full-size function and navigation keys, volume control and disc eject keys, as well as two USB ports. Both cost £39, excluding VAT.

See Hot Stuff for an exclusive review of Apple’s new mouse.

iMovie 2
iMovie 2 features a refined user interface with Mac OS X-like design elements; improved audio-editing capabilities, enhanced controls for titling and transitions, and powerful new special effects. iMovie 2 will be bundled on all FireWire-enabled Macs, including the new iMac, Power Mac G4 Cube and Power Mac G4 systems.

New displays
Apple also unveiled a completely new family of displays to complement the new G4 Cube. The new displays include: the see-through 17-inch (16-inch viewable) Apple Studio Display CRT; the 15-inch Apple Studio Display flat panel and the “improved” 22-inch Apple Cinema Display. Each is powered from the computer, eliminating the need for a separate power cord.

London-based Apple fans invited to iPhone 5 launch event

London-based Apple fans invited to iPhone 5 launch event

Apple’s iPhone themed-event may be taking place at 10am in Cupertino, but due to the time difference it’ll be Beer O’Clock in London when Tim Cook et al take to the stage in Cupertino.

With this in mind, the London Mac User Group (LMUG) is holding its own event in a London pub where it’ll set up projectors and big screens for the unveiling of the iPhone 5, iOS 5 and iCloud.

Though event organisers stress that they can’t guarantee there’ll be a live feed from Cupertino, the Bagel Tech team will be in attendance, and attendees will be able to follow all of the announcements and discuss them with other Apple fans and experts.

The event will take place at Wood Marylebone, which you can find at 21 Balcombe Street, Marylebone, NW1 6HE – nearest tubes are Marylebone and Baker Street – and entry is free, though you might want to make sure you get there in plenty of time.

As well as a selection of real ales, wines and soft drinks, the Wood also serves Thai food. You can check out the event’s Facebook page for more information. There will also be a raffle.

Of course, if you can’t make it, stay tuned to Macworld.co.uk, where we’ll have a live text feed from the Cupertino event.
