4G for iPhone or just Chinese whispers?

4G for iPhone or just Chinese whispers?

Reuters is reporting that China Mobile Ltd, the world’s largest mobile carrier by subscribers, has claimed that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has expressed interest in developing an iPhone based on the Chinese carrier’s network standard.

China Mobile is developing its next-generation TD-LTE mobile network technology and there have been talks over a possible iPhone tie-up with the carrier.

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and is the primary technology behind 4G mobile networks. It offers much faster upload and download speeds than 3G. TD-LTE stands for Time Division LTE, a standard developed by China Mobile and currently being trialled by companies such as Ericsson. It offers a compatibility path with WiMAX, which LTE lacks.

More information on TD-LTE can be found at GoMo News.

Earlier this week Apple COO Tim Cook reaffirmed his company’s interest in China, saying that Apple was spending “huge energy” in the country.

Intel semiconductor market share highest in a decade

Intel semiconductor market share highest in a decade

Intel’s share of the semiconductor market is as high as it’s been in 10 years, thanks to strong sales performance and a key acquisition, according to a study from IHS.

Dale Ford, IHS head of electronics and semiconductor research, said Intel’s 2011 growth marked a substantial improvement over previous years.

“The company’s rise was spurred by soaring demand for its PC-oriented microprocessors, and for its NAND flash memory used in consumer and wireless products. Intel’s revenue also was boosted by its acquisition of Infineon’s wireless business unit. The company’s strong rise helped it to stave off the rising challenge mounted by No. 2 semiconductor supplier Samsung …, which had been whittling away at Intel’s lead in recent years,” he said in a press release.

Despite the nearly 21% gains experienced by Intel, the semiconductor market as a whole grew by just 1.3% during 2011, IHS noted. This fell short of the company’s prediction of 1.9% growth, which IHS blamed on a weaker-than-expected fourth quarter.

Even as smartphone market explodes, it remains an Android-iOS world

Even as smartphone market explodes, it remains an Android-iOS world

The world’s love affair with smartphones continues to blaze. Between April and June, worldwide smartphone shipments grew by 52.3 percent compared to the same period in 2012, according to a new report by market research firm IDC. That’s the highest year-over-year growth rate for smartphones in 15 months, and IDC says it’s only to going to get bigger from here.

“The smartphone market is still a rising tide that’s lifting many ships,” Kevin Restivo, an IDC senior research analyst said in a statement. “Though Samsung and Apple are the dominant players, the market is as fragmented as ever. There is ample opportunity for smartphone vendors with differentiated offerings.”

But how differentiated smartphone vendors can afford to be is up for debate. Taking a look at IDC’s smartphone numbers, one thing is clear–success currently comes to those making iPhones and Android devices. IDC’s top five smartphone vendors included either Apple or smartphone makers focused on Android.

Even going beyond the top five, the only notable phone makers on IDC’s rankings are Huawei and HTC, both staunch Android makers. Some of these companies do dabble with Windows Phone devices including HTC, Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE, but Android smartphones are still the main focus.

Same old ringtone

The fact that Android and iOS dominate the smartphone market is hardly news. Symbian-turned-Windows-Phone maker Nokia hasn’t made IDC’s top five smartphone vendor list in a year, and BlackBerry has been MIA for three consecutive quarters.

Nevertheless, Ramon Llamas, IDC’s research manager for mobile phones, believes there’s plenty of room yet for BlackBerry, Windows Phone, or even an upstart like Mozilla’s Firefox OS to take away some steam from the front runners. (Disclaimer: IDC is owned by the same parent company that owns TechHive.)

Consumers may be focused on Android and iOS, but carriers still want a third alternative, Llamas says. And there’s good reason for phone makers to try and break the Android-iOS deadlock beyond the hopes and dreams of wireless carriers.

Right now, many small phone makers want to ride the coattails of the big Android producers by selling inexpensive alternatives to flagship lineups like Samsung’s Galaxy phones. “If you’re Samsung or LG, then you’re in a pretty good position [as an Android phone maker],” Llamas says. “Beyond those two, there is a veritable sea of vendors producing [Android] devices and making very little money on them, if at all.”

R&D costs mixed with the heavy price of marketing an Android phone so it will stand out among all the other Android offerings makes it difficult for smaller producers to find success. That’s why there may still be room for more smartphone platforms to succeed if they can gain that critical mass of users as well as significant attention from third-party app makers.

Nokia is not tallying iPhone-sized sales numbers with its Windows Phone-based Lumia lineup, but the company is at least seeing some growth. Nokia recently reported it shipped 7.4 million Lumia smartphones during the second quarter of 2013, up from 4 million Lumia devices the prior year. And the company is pushing further into the market with recent Windows Phone announcements like the Lumia 1020 featuring a 41-megapixel camera.

If Windows Phone can’t succeed, perhaps BlackBerry can as it continues to reinvent itself with the touch-centric BlackBerry 10 mobile OS. Other alternatives to Android and iOS abound including Tizen, Firefox OS, and Ubuntu.

Not all the new smartphone upstarts can win, of course. But with the demand for always-connected handsets growing rapidly, there’s still a chance we may see at least a third significant smartphone platform in the coming years. Who that third place winner might be, however, is anybody’s guess.

Remedy Comment On Alan Wake 2: “Definitely Love To Do, Looking Into Possibilities And Opportunities”

Remedy Entertainment’s Sam Lake recently provided an update on the next installment in Alan Wake series, Alan Wake 2, and its not a good news because it seems like there isn’t any progress on the series to announce yet.

Alan Wake 2In a recent interview to Polygon, Sam Lake was asked to comment on Alan Wake 2, here is what he said:

“We are constantly looking for opportunities and talking about possibilities to see what we can do with Wake. I would definitely love to do more Wake, but it needs to be something we absolutely feel is right for Wake, and that the bar is high enough that it will be cool.”

“Not just doing at the cost of doing something which isn’t as cool as it should be. So… time will tell.”

Alan Wake 2 for Xbox One launch title would have been a cool idea but development team at Remedy Entertainment started working on Quantum Dream, a brand new IP based on a TV series of the same name.

The called Treyarch accustomed to describe these new figures was: “troubled people” with “a lengthy and sordid good reputation for past misdeeds”. These four figures are tossed right into a twisted form of Morg City, that is overrun by zombies and therefore are led with a mysterious, hard to rely on figure known as the cisco kid Man (Robert Picardo).

Treyarch has confirmed these four figures story will tie will tie in to the primary Zombies story previously games, particularly “Mob from the Dead” from Cod: Black Ops II.

The 2nd zombie story in Cod: Black Ops III is entitled as “The EnormousInch, it’ll concentrate on the alternate versions from the original figures: Tank Dempsey (Steven Blum), Nikolai Belinski (Fred Tatasciore), Takeo Masaki (Tom Kane) and Edward Richtofen (Nolan North), who have been introduced within the Black Ops II map “Roots”. Their story continues where “Roots” ended, because they make an effort to rewrite the initial timeline’s history.
